Here is an interesting research paper evaluating ChatGPT under three conditions:
𝟭. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰: ChatGPT was tasked to mimic various professionals with no given political instructions (default ChatGPT).
𝟮. 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮: ChatGPT was directed to embody a democrat with libertarian (left wing) leanings.
𝟯. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮: ChatGPT was instructed to take on a republican persona with authoritarian (right wing) views.
𝗢𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲:
The purpose of this study was to measure how closely the responses of the politically-default, commonly used version of ChatGPT, align with those given under explicit political directives.
𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀:
• 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Default ChatGPT responses correlate positively with democratic (libertarian) responses, suggesting a liberal bias.
• 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆: A negative correlation with republican (authoritarian) responses indicates a departure from conservative views.
𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
This analysis reveals that standard ChatGPT configuration, without specific political instructions, tends to produce answers that resonate more with libertarian or democratic viewpoints as opposed to conservative or republican ones. The correlation numbers demonstrate the extent to which ChatGPT's users in its default mode are likely to receive responses leaning towards liberal ideologies.
